by BRIAN METZLER | JAN 28, 2018

The GEL Nimbus from ASICS is built for the ultimate cushioned, stable run experience.  21 editions into it's lifespan, the ASICS Nimbus is a neutral running shoe that has the plushness you need and the support your feet want.

A rarity in modern shoe design, the ASICS Nimbus 21 edition actually comes in at $10 less than it predecesor at $149.95

Read on to learn the ins and outs of the latest edition from our guest review Brian Metzler.

THE BUZZ

One of the all-time best-sellers in the ASICS line, the neutral-oriented Nimbus has been updated with minor improvements have resulted in an improved fit and smoother ride.

The GEL Nimbus is an everyday trainer that offers maximum shock absorption, resilient cushioning and a plush sensation under foot.

WHAT'S NEW: ASICS GEL NIMBUS 21

A newly redesigned engineered mesh upper serves up greater breathability, more adaptable comfort and structural security, plus slightly more wiggle room in the forefoot.

A system of lightweight 3D printed overlays provides seamlessirritant-free structure to the upper, adding support without sacrificing flexibility or natural flow of the foot.

The other change to this year’s model of the ASICS GEL Nimbus is that the Trusstic stability system is now found only in the medial side of the shoe, a change that makes for a more flowy, neutral ride.

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

With the improved spacing and hold in the forefoot and a rearfoot-clutching exoskeletal heel counter, we give this shoe high marks for fit for a wide range of foot shapes and sizes. It has a plush interior that cradles and supports the foot, offering long-wearing comfort.

It features ASICS’ iconic GEL cushioning in the heel and its springy Flytefoam Propel in the forefoot, creating a ride that’s both softly cushioned but energetic and bouncy.

WHO'S IT BEST FOR?

The Asics Nimbus 21 will suit any runner who appreciates a comfortable fit, a smooth ride and long-lasting durability.  Those runners will love this reliable workhorse, no matter what kind of weekly mileage volume is logged each week.

The latest Asics Nimbus could be an ideal shoe for a new runner, someone training to run their first half marathon or a veteran marathoner who’s trying for another Boston qualifier.

PROS AND CONS OF THE ASICS GEL NIMBUS 21

Asics Nimbus 21 - Pros

PROS: ASICS GEL NIMBUS 21

The list price of this shoe actually went down $10 compared to the previous edition, increasing the quality to price ratio of this legacy model.

The shoe has been designed toenhance the foot's natural gait from heel strike to toe-off. Vertical flex grooves help decouple the shoe’s structural tooling along the line of progression for enhanced gait efficiency.

The Nimbus 21 features a premium Ortholite X-40 sockliner with higher rebound properties while providing excellent moisture management and a high-level of breathability.

There are numerous reflective elements designed to enhance visibility during low light hours.

Asics Nimbus 21 - Cons

CONS: ASICS GEL NIMBUS 21

The Asics Nimbus isn’t the lightest shoe in the neutral-cushioned category, but it doesn’t feel clunky or heavy either.

Although it’s not a speed merchant, the springy midsole offers enough pop for tempo runs and race-paced long runs.
