HOKA ONE ONE CLIFTON 6 - SHOE REVIEW

by MELANIE MITCHELL | JUNE, 2018

The HOKA Clifton was the shoe that changed runners' perceptions about what HOKA ONE ONE could be. When it broke into the running scene, the Clifton delivered the perfect combination of soft and light in a maximalist package that could go the distance with you.

The Clifton quickly racked up awards and now onto its sixth edition, HOKA has continued to develop the sleek look, building upon what runners have always been drawn to in this maximalist running shoe.

THE BUZZ

The new HOKA Clifton 6 has capitalized on the success of previous models and added some stylish new elements for 2019 to raise the runway game for this HOKA classic.

Alongside the upgraded mesh upper, gone is the solid Hoka midsole look with some careful blending and texture added to create the illusion of a less maximalist shoe with all the maximalist benefits.

Read on to learn all you need to know about the HOKA Clifton 6 for the 2019 running season.

WHAT'S NEW: HOKA CLIFTON 6

The HOKA Clifton 6 builds upon the successes of what was introduced in the #5.  The engineered mesh upper was a hit with runners and the new reiteration enhances the mesh, allowing for breathability and keeping the shoe as lightweight as possible.  HOKA has added in embroidery reinforcement to reduce layers and offering improved lock down of the mid-foot.

Already a lightwieght shoe, if you thought the HOKA Clifton couldn't get any lighter, then think again!  HOKA has managed to shave off 0.4oz from the men's shoe and 0.2oz from the women's.  While this might seem like micro-improvements, the effect on a long run knowing you're in a lighter shoe, might take you from a destroyed runner's soul to crossing the metaphorical finish line.

The HOKA Clifton still features the Hoka’s EVA and early stage Meta-Rocker geometry for a classic, smooth ride.

HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 - Fit, Feel, Ride

FIT-FEEL-RIDE

FIT: HOKA has caplitalized on the winning overlay introduced in the previous edition making the Clifton 6 an airy style, perfect for summer running. As previously noted, the fit of the upper with precision-placed embroidery keeps the mid-foot secure once it's locked in with the lacing.  Note, the Clifton is also available in a wide version.

FEEL: If you're a regular HOKA Clifton wearer, slipping your foot into the Clifton 6 is like a going back home - albeit a home with brand-new lick of paint. It has the same springy feel with plenty of room to let your feet breathe and run on their own terms. For those new to the Clifton, this style is a perfect example of what a maximalist shoe should be; smooth, cushioned and stable, and ready for many miles ahead.

RIDE: The Clifton is known for the HOKA early-stage Meta-Rocker and the full compression EVA midsole and neither have changed in the sixth edition. The rocker sensation from foot-strike to takeoff is where this HOKA style comes into it's own. The Clifton is a stable shoe thanks to the geometry of the midsole and sole. The lightness of foot of the style is enhanced by HOKA strategically placing hi-abrasion rubber zones on the sole to ensure the shoe is as light as possible.

WHO'S IT BEST FOR?

The HOKA Clifton speaks to runners with a neutral gait and is a good for training runs and races on unforgiving surfaces. The runner who puts in the mileage will appreciate the Clifton for keeping their legs feeling fresh mile after mile, day after day.  Tired legs love the Cliftons, fresh legs love the Cliftons; the style soothes the former and supports the latter.

For those lower-mileage runners looking to add mileage over the season, we can almost guarantee you'll be tempted to run more once you've spent a few miles with your new Clifton bff.

PROS AND CONS OF THE HOKA CLIFTON 6

HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 Pros

Pros: HOKA Clifton 6
The HOKA Clifton was always a lightweight shoe, and HOKA have somehow managed to make it even lighter - no runner can argue with that.

Summer running is hot, and HOKA have delivered with a light mesh upper that supports, yet allows feet to breathe.

If you're a runner looking for a maximalist shoe for the first time, the Clifton will not disappoint.

HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 Cons

Cons: HOKA Clifton 6
We've said this before, and we'll say it again, if you’re looking for a con with the Clifton, the question to ask yourself is whether a max-cushioned shoe is right for you.

If you’re a runner used to a less cushioned shoe, the HOKA Clifton will undoubtedly feel different, and change is scary to many!  However, go for a few runs and we think you’ll soon be drinking the Clifton Cool-Aid with us.
