FIRST LOOK: NEW BALANCE FUELCELL 5280
New Balance FUELCELL 5280 Racing Flat: $200 - Speed from New Balance
For those who like to race goals, you need to run fast. Whatever fast means to you, a shoe designed for speed is your go-to for race-day performance.
New Balance enters the race-day collection with the new FUELCELL 5280. Debuted with pro athletes from New Balance - notably both Jenny Simpson and Jake Wightman winning the 5th Avenue Mile in NYC wearing an early version of the FUELCELL 5280.
The Innovation Team at New Balance under the leadership of Danny Orr, have worked on this specific shoe for over two years. They wanted to create a fast shoe for those athletes who were attracted to the ‘Road Mile’ races popping up nationwide. The New Balance team noted when an athlete signs up for a road mile, they don’t sign up to run it, they sign up to race’.
And New Balance likes the idea of people racing whether it’s for a finish line tape or a PR. Their goal was to create a shoe that mimicked a track spike that could be used on the road.
NEW BALANCE FUELCELL 5280: FEATURES
With the design parameters before them, the Innovation Team at New Balance committed to letting data drive design alongside their creativity. They meticulously measured everything from their pro athlete beta testers.
Using the treadmill and high speed cameras with 3-D imaging catching every angle, they dissected angles in a way mathematicians would be proud of, landing, take off, foot position with load and propulsion data layered on top.
The end result is the FUELCELL 5280 features an upper of a middle-distance spike, a midsole that features a carbon plate for quick toe-off and a sole that is designed for traction.
What was first tested on the 5th Avenue Mile has been refined to become the FUELCELL 5280 that launches September 2019.

NEW BALANCE REBEL
THE TRAINING VERSION OF THE FUELCELL
Built on the data and learnings from the FUELCELL 5280 research, the FUELCELL Rebel is the training version of the racing flat, so you can run fast every day. New Balance like to call it speed built smarter.
The outsole of the Rebel features a distinct traction pattern designed for midfoot to forefoot strikers. It’s designed for fast training days and with enough cushion for those training days.
At $130 and weighing in at 7.97 oz (M) and 5.85 oz (W), the Rebel enters into the super lightweight category.
