Resolutions suck. How many times have you heard a friend make an outrageous claim about a new undertaking they were planning on starting in the new year, only for them to be back on the same old bulls**t 3 weeks later? “New Year, New Me!” ‘Fraid not, sweetie. Try again next year.
This “friend” who can’t stick to the new plan might have been a family member. It might have been you. So, what’s the deal? Why are resolutions so hard to keep? I mean, our intentions are good, but so is the yellow-bricked highway to hell. I think I may have mixed up that colloquialism with ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and an AC/DC song, but the point is, intentions don’t equal actions. Starting brand new actions are tough!
It’s tough because we’re asking ourselves to do something completely different than we’re used to. The human mind and body HATES that stuff! We are naturally resistant to 180-degree change because the mind and body LOVES routine. You may have heard it takes 21 days for the power of habit to set in, well it takes more than 10 TIMES THAT AMOUNT to start something new! So if you don’t feel like trying to do something over 200 times until it sticks, we at JackRabbit encourage you to set a New Year’s Evolution, rather than the same tired Resolution.
Setting an evolution for New Year’s Day 2018 is easy because you’ll leverage what you’re already doing. And because we’re just modifying something you’re already doing, you’ll also have greater success in making this change permanent. Think of this as an upgrade, as opposed to a complete renovation.
Because we’re kinda in to the whole fitness thing at JackRabbit, let’s use fitness goals as an example. If you’re already a high performance runner, your evolution could be to set a PR in your next race! If you just started running and working out in 2017, evolve your fitness by consistently working out an extra day every week, or adding in better recovery sessions! If you haven’t started a regular workout routine yet, evolve by simply moving more, drinking more water, and eating more greens! Exclamation points for everyone!!!
